Full Stack Web Developer: Java, JavaScript, Atlassian Plugins

Type: contractor; potential full-time hire
Term: 6 month duration @ ~30 hours/week
Location: this is a remote position; you may work from anywhere within North, Central or South America

What We Need

You'll be working on our newest product, Arsenale Dataplane for JIRA.  Dataplane – one of Atlassian's "Best JIRA Add-Ons" for two years running – is an advanced reporting and analytics plugin for Atlassian JIRA that provides organizations with new insight into their JIRA project status and team performance.

As an experienced, full stack engineer on our small product development team you'll take a significant leadership role in architecting and implementing major new areas of product functionality as we continue to build Dataplane into the premier JIRA reporting solution for managers.

Our front end framework is a combination of Backbone.js, Google Closure (Soy) templates, and jQuery. Our back end is Java, running as an OSGi service under Atlassian JIRA, and we work regularly with MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and Oracle.

The ideal candidate already has intimate familiarity with Atlassian JIRA or Confluence, and has developed one or more non-trivial plugins for JIRA, Confluence, Stash, FishEye or Bamboo.

At minimum, you have 5+ years experience in top-to-bottom, Java-based web development and a mastery of a majority of the following technologies:

  • Java
  • defining and using Java REST APIs
  • jQuery, JavaScript, HTML & CSS
  • XML, JSON, XHR and related AJAX methodologies
  • client-side templates (Google Closure or others)
  • Backbone.js, or another common MVC framework
  • Maven
  • Git

Experience with the following is also desired:

  • 2D charting libraries or frameworks (e.g. jFreeChart, Highcharts, D3)

  • Photoshop, Illustrator or other design tools
  • Balsamiq Mockups, Gliffy or other UI mockup tools

How to Apply

Please email the following items to:

  1. a few paragraphs describing your skills and experience, and their relevance to our projects
  2. answer the following questions. (This shouldn't take more than 20 minutes for the level of detail we're looking for.)
    1. in Java, you are using a HashMap object to store data. You call values() on the object and iterate through the list of values. While iterating, some code modifies the HashMap object. How does this affect the iteration?
    2. imagine a simple address book web app using client-side Javascript and server-side Java. The user visits a page that displays a list of all contacts. Describe how this might be implemented, from the initial page request to a display of all the contacts in the browser page.
    3. in Atlassian JIRA, you need to add a menu item to the top-level JIRA system navigation bar that links to your plugin's main page. How do you do this in code?
  3. include the following:
    1. your hourly rate (a range is fine)
    2. links to your online background and body of work (LinkedIn, Atlassian Marketplace plugins, web sites, Github or Bitbucket repos)
    3. your resume as a link, or as a PDF, text or Word file attachment
